San Miguel de Allende Centro / Guanajuato, México
This 17th century home in the historic center of San Miguel de Allende had been expanded and renovated repeatedly over the centuries, culminating in an architectural mess. Our clients fell in love with the location, the exquisite, neoclassical facade and magnificent trees in the ample garden and asked us to make the house work.
We devised a comfortable layout maintaining the original parts of the house and reimagining the rest. We reconfigured elevation changes to make circulation flow better. By connecting the previously open ends of the “U” shape plan we created a generously proportioned outdoor living room with a private terrace area above, effectively doubling the outdoor entertainment space. All five bedrooms now have en suite bathrooms, a particularly generous one for the primary bedroom as requested by the clients. On top of the new living room, we made a large study with a brick boveda domed ceiling attached to the primary suite.
The decorative scheme blends pieces we designed or found for the clients’ former Los Angeles residence with a few key pieces that are original to the house and new pieces we designed and purchased for the home. The result is an eclectic, lived in feel — just right for this family.
