Casa de Lucho

San Miguel de Allende  /   Guanajuato, México

The charge from our clients was to update and streamline a home built 20 years ago to create a comfortable yet sophisticated backdrop for family living and their dramatic contemporary art and craft collections. The former owners had gone overboard with kitsch, so the editing was extensive. Working with architect Nicole Bisgaard, we enhanced the best aspects of the original structure and redesigned the rest.

The transformed spaces are light and airy, embodying the sleek, contemporary aesthetic the clients love. The spaces were unified both from a plan perspective and by limiting the number of materials employed throughout the house, enhancing the flow and sense of calm. Smooth plaster walls in a custom-blended shade of off-white are consistent throughout the house. The ground floor has pale grey limestone floors laid in a diagonal checkerboard that flows inside and out without borders; upstairs, we stained existing tile floors to a deep tobacco. Dilapidated wood doors and windows were replaced with crisp steel and glass that bring in much more natural light and set the tone for the more contemporary interiors.

We incorporated furnishings from the clients’ former New York residence with mid-century Mexican discoveries, antique carpets and extensive FWB-designed furniture and lighting to create a luxurious interior that embraces modern living and provides the perfect backdrop for the bold strokes of contemporary art.
